Runner's knee (also called chondromalacia patellae) is damage to the smooth cartilage under the kneecap. It begins with a softening of the cartilage. With time, the cartilage wears down, roughens, or cracks. This can cause pain, swelling, or a grinding noise. It is called runner's knee because it can develop over time with activities such as running. It can also be triggered by blows to the knee.

Treatment
Possible treatments include:

Resting the knee by avoiding activities that bother it.
Medicine to reduce pain and swelling.
Exercises to strengthen the thigh muscles that support the knee. Exercises can also help prevent pain and future problems.
Avoiding activities that require you to bend your knees deeply.
