A bit internal information (reliable!): the reason why the recent government intervention of SH's real estate market is not because SH people don't have house to live, but because the central government has been under increasing pressure from officials of other provinces. They compalin SH has been draining too much of nation's financial resources, therefore depriving the development opportunities for other provinces. In the meantime an astronomical amount of cash savings Chinese people put in the bank is hungrily waiting for investment opportunity. As soon as this pressure eases up, the market will eventually come back.
The fact is: SH has the most competitive market economy combined with the most efficient governance in the country, and its leadership will strengthen as the Long River Delta deepens industrialisation. I can tell you that people's desire of making money in that region is so strong the only thing you can compare with it is Wall Street and the Silicone Valley. The only minor problem right now is people generally don't know how, they don't see very far beyond their hometown, but that's changing and changing very fast. The economic potential is tremendous.
