in biological system, to be exact usually is impossible. furthermore, even if we have some models, e.g. the infinitesimal model, the mathematical derivaritions can be very complex. however, for example, if the taylor series is used, the high order items are often ignored. this is not rare even beyond quantitative genetics.
sometime, the matrix language is introduced, which makes the ugly QG equations looks better. but you should never expect the persons who conduct practical breeding have same mathematical knowledges as you have. here the approximation works again.
