If you make a real significant discovery while still employed your employer will have a very legitimate claim on your work even if you say you did it on your own time. Of course if you just want some extra money that is a different story. However usually a second job is a poor way to do it. It is hard enough to do one job well. Focusing on advancing in your normal job can get you there much more quickly.
