Last week, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that established the constitutional right to abortion in the United States in 1973. This decision, along with legislation either pending or passed in several states, will limit maternal health options for women across the country and impede the ability of health care professionals, including hematologists, to provide medical care and counsel according to their training and ethical obligations to their patients.

ASH previously endorsed a statement led by the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Osteopathic Association, and the American Psychiatric Association, stressing opposition to any laws and regulations that interfere in the confidential relationship between a patient and their physician ad seek to inhibit clinicians’ ability to secure healthy futures for patients and their families.

Additionally, ASH recently released a statement on "The Right to Maternal Health Care in Hematology,” which outlines the many blood disorders that put pregnant women at risk of severe, even fatal, health complications. The statement addresses ways that hematologic conditions can adversely affect maternal health, asserts that the choice to terminate a pregnancy is a crucial clinical consideration when a woman is at risk of severe health complications or death, and states that access to evidence-based medical information and lifesaving medical options, including termination of pregnancy, is a maternal right.
