I mean it's unlikely Chen made up the entire story, because if the story was fundamentally untrue, the Australian government could easily falsify it if they want, for example, to interview Lan's son if he is still in the country, or to search his travel record etc.

Credibility is the only thing Chen had to build his case. Unless he is a super SB, he will not trade his credibility for quick attention using a total lie, especially when he is dealing with Australian authority.
