It can tell the owner his location, that he is approaching an intersection, that he is walking into a dead end, or that he is too close to a river, etc.
It can even be offered for free to the blinds. You can get money from stock owners who pay to get their stores listed as landmarks.
But it probably won't work well in NYC: too many skyscrapers, not good GPS signal.
