Senator Vanstone has confirmed that a phone call was made from the Immigration Department to the Chinese consulate to check Mr Chen's identity.
But she says the call was made before the defecting Chinese diplomat made his claim for political or territorial asylum.
"My advice is someone wanting to ascertain if this person was who they said they were simply inquired as to whether someone of that name worked at the embassy," she said.
The Government says Mr Chen's refugee claim will be assessed on its merits.
