On Wednesday, Feb. 22, around 7:15 p.m., Olathe, Kansas, law enforcement Officers were dispatched to Austin’s Bar and Grill in the 2100 block of East 151st Street in response to reports of gunshots being fired.

Upon arrival, the Officers located three adult males with gunshot wounds. The Officers rendered aid to the victims until Johnson County, Kansas, Med-Act arrived and transported them to area hospitals. One of the victims later died at the hospital.

The Kansas City Star reported that witnesses indicated a man was in Austin’s drinking and making racial slurs. The establishment was reportedly packed at the time with people who were viewing a University of Kansas basketball game. Apparently, another patron of Austin’s Bar and Grill, tried calm the man down who was making loud profane racial slurs. One patron heard the man shout “Get out of my country” before drawing a weapon and opening fire. The man then fled the scene.

At approximately 12:40 a.m., Thursday, Officers with the Clinton Police Department in Clinton, Missouri, responded to a call for service and contacted the suspect of the shooting, Adam Purinton, 51, Olathe, at Applebee's. Clinton Police Officers took Purinton into custody shortly after midnight Thursday. Purinton was not carrying a weapon when he was arrested. Purinton was placed in the Henry County Jail for first degree murder.

Captain Sonny Lynch said an Applebee's bartender was instrumental in facilitating contact with the Clinton Police Department through Henry County Central Communications 911 after the suspect stated he had been involved in a shooting. Reportedly, Purinton told the Applebee’s bartender he had killed two men from the Middle East.

Two of the men shot were Aviation Systems Division associate engineers with the Garmin headquarters in Olathe. Srinivas Kuchibhotla was killed. Alok Madasani was injured. A third man, Ian Grillot, was shot in the hand and shoulder.

This case remains under investigation by the Olathe Police Department. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Olathe Police Department at (913) 971-6950 or the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477.
