The access log of the proxy server sometimes reveals surprising stats. For example, in the past two days there are 29940 requests missing from cache, meaning the proxy server doesn't have them in the local cache and must go all the way to the original server (xys.org) to get the requested contents. This is sure to increase the delay and add burden to the bandwidth. Yet out of those requests, 10277 requests, more than 1/3 (that's a lot!) of all missed, are seeking a single file: /favicon.ico . Web browser requests this file and if exists, displays it in front of the URL in the navigation bar (For example type amd.com in your browser and watch the green icon appear). If browser can't find it, it keeps trying in the subsequent requests, thus those MISS traffic seen in access log. (Back in the old days when the proxy was powered by SQUID it wasn't such a big deal because SQUID has a feature called "negative cache" which doesn't exist in Apache's mod_proxy) If the webmaster can plant such a file on xys.org, the proxy server will be able to cache the file as do any other image files, therefore reduce traffic and speed up response. Besides, it's a cool thing to do anyway, also boasting recognition of the XYS 'brand'.
