Visible physical abuse might not be very common in decent schools. However, prolong working hour is very very common, or a must. Consider that takes place at a child's teens, when everything is just being shaped. Besides, verbal abuse is also very common, and not even recognized as abuse. "You are doom to be a prostitute." would come from a teacher of decent high school.
I don't know whether long hour or verbal abuse are better than physical abuse. But the imposer feel less guilty/shameful to impose those, and thus do it more frequently. Junior high and high school are hells.
