Ebola patient's Ohio visit prompts state to issue heightened quarantine guidelines as precautionary measure

"The ODH guidelines are being recommended out of an abundance of caution to take strong measures to protect Ohio residents," Dr. Mary DiOrio, state epidemiologist and interim chief of the ODH Bureau of Prevention and Health Promotion, said in a statement. "It has become clear that we cannot be too careful in efforts to contain the spread of this deadly disease."

Here's a breakdown of the new guidelines:

For individuals with any direct physical contact with a person diagnosed with Ebola, including brief contact such as a handshake without personal protective equipment -- 21 days of quarantine from the last contact in conjunction with public health officials.
For individuals who did not make direct contact, but were within a 3-foot radius of the index case (such as adjacent passengers in an airplane or car) for a prolonged period of time -- twice-daily temperature-taking and symptom check (one observed by a public health official) for 21 days after the last contact.
For individuals without direct contact but in the vicinity of the diagnosed case as indicated by a public health official -- notification of health officials and self-monitoring.

University School has asked an employee and their son, an enrolled student, to stay home after indirect exposure to a nurse infected with Ebola.

The family hosted a guest who flew on Frontier Flight 1142, the plane that carried a nurse infected with Ebola from Dallas to Cleveland on Friday.

School Headmaster Stephen Murray said the decision was made in an abundance of caution.

"Our school community is the lowest risk group possible," he said.

The private school operates two campuses in Huntington Valley and Shaker Heights. Murray would not say which campus the student attended and the employee worked.

The family also has a child enrolled at Hathaway Brown who was asked to stay home. Neither school has decided whether the child will be required to remain home for 21 days, the time it takes for Ebola symptoms to appear.

Akron Public Schools has closed Judith A. Resnik Community Learning Center after Summit County Public Health determined that a parent of a student there had contact with Dallas nurse Amber Joy Vinson in the days before she tested positive for the Ebola virus.

Akron Superintendent David James said the decision to close the kindergarten through Sixth grade school was an extreme precautionary measure. The district will disinfect the building, it is expected to reopen Monday.

"This is an extremely precautionary measure," James said. "The Summit County Public Health Department has given us no indication of anyone else within the APS district having had contact with Ms. Vinson."
