2009年3月16日，脊柱裂协会举行脊柱裂研究及护理首届世界大会。会前的3月12日，ACH医院在肖的指导下做了8例手术，其中包括唯一的一名10岁脊髓损伤患者Adam Byrum。他是其中唯一的一例非“双盲”。

整整3年之后的今年3月12日，这名患者的结果公布了：“术后6个月有少许初步改善，术后两年无临床改善”。继德国纽约大学的2例、Beaumont医院的2例、德国的8例脊髓损伤肖氏手术临床试验全部失败后，这例失败无需惊讶。不过，值得注意的是，这是肖氏手术术后进行探查的唯一一例：“肉眼观察发现吻合完整，未见电生理活动，神经未从吻合处再生。”

术后探查发现虽然吻合完整，但神经却未再生，这对肖氏手术原理是致命一击。三家试验方10余名脊髓损伤患者无一建立反射弧，已经有了神经解剖方面证明：异质神经不能嫁接再生，肖氏弧原理错误。

两年前，脊柱裂协会首届世界大会期间，肖传国及其合作者们曾经着实风光了一下。肖当年曾主持研究生课程传授肖氏手术。而Peters当时则在分组会议演讲中发布其一年试验结果，其摘要获奖。ACH启动试验，Emory大学也准备开始。会后，三家准备联合进行多中心试验。

该脊髓损伤患者的再手术探查
膀胱容量太小了。
如果膀胱容量大一些，可考虑做移植手术。
现考虑做选择性骶脊神经前根切断术或膀胱增容术。
在解剖连续性方面，腰5感觉神经根完整
电刺激无膀胱收缩（膀胱电极到位）
神经吻合处测量不到神经动作电位
