if you really wish to push the "awe of nature" argument, you can certainly make it to mean at least three things: fear, reverance, and wonder at Nature. and no doubt wonder is the beginning of knowledge. this is purely speculative - a semantic game that is useful in an intellectual sense but won't help address realistic issues. the meaning of words has to be determined in their actual use. i haven't got a chance to see the actual article Prof. He cited and critiqued; so, i really don't have much to say what's the contextual meaning of this slogan in that particular article.
