Any estate not denominated in HKD or held in real estate in Hong Kong will not be taxed by Hong Kong. So lots of mainland tycoons moved the majority of their asset to Hong Kong held in foreign currency-denominated asset at international private banks just in case mainland China decides to levy death tax.

Bringing their companies public in Hong Kong is considered the best way of asset transfer across the border.
