Chinese chip theft claim
By Liz Chong
CHINA suffered an embarrassing setback after allegations emerged that a high-profile university scientist stole US technology for a “homegrown” computer chip.

Chen Jin, a dean of Shanghai’s Jiaotong University, was fired from the elite school whose graduates include former President Jiang Zemin. Mr Chen has also been told to return government subsidies he received for his research into the Hanxin digital chip. An inquiry indicated that Mr Chen had stolen the technology from a foreign company, while the Hanxin chip could not verify fingerprints or play MP3s as previously claimed.
A local newspaper, the 21st Century Business Herald, claimed Mr Chen had taken chips made by Freescale Semiconductor, a US firm, and hired migrant workers to replace its trademarks with Hanxin’s.
The claims are embarrassing for China’s leadership, who have sought to develop domestic high-tech industries to reduce reliance on foreign technology. The project was touted as a milestone and was closely linked to the Government, with financial backing from China’s most prestigious scientific and academic bodies.
State media reported that the Chinese Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao, had even visited Mr Chen’s laboratories.
A Shanghai official said the central government will decide if Mr Chen is to be prosecuted.
