I always transfer cells from one lab to another one with such tricks: culturing cells in a small flask (T25), filling with medium containging 10% FBS untill full (to avoid bubbles disrupt the cells). That's OK! Wei probably used such tricks to bring the cells back, it's not necessary to put cells under -80℃. By the way, cells can't be kept at -20℃ for long time. And what Wei did should be illegal,
