Currently the over-night train fair is about RMB500. But business is very good. So I won't worry about competing with airlines, unless some people think it maks more sense to spend the night on the train, rather than speding a few hours of day time to travel. I tend to agree with this in some cases, especially if you cannot make round trip in one day.
About linking SH and BJ to smaller cities, I am not sure right now transportation is the limiting factor. For example, I live and work in New Jersey. I am sure that the same company won't be able to operate in Mid West. Being close to a big city (New York) brings many benefits: labor poll, business interactions, information, etc. However, going to New York city itself from where I live is still not easy. In fact I'd say nobody in our company goes to the city more than a few times a year (maybe except some very young and energetic people, for personal activities). The metropolitan benefit somehow "irradiates" to the surrounding area, without direct link to the center.
