It won't develop resistance at least in the first 12-18 months. Other newer drugs have not been approved yet, such as Bristol-Myers Squibb's dasatinib is awaiting for FDA approval and Novartis's succeedor of Gleevec is in Phase III clinical trials.
It might be much cheaper if you or your friend have a way to purchase Gleevec from India since there is no patent protection for this drug in India.
