You need to transfer your copyright to the publisher before printing. Otherwise it is illegal for the publisher to print and distribute your work.
The purpose of "copyright" stuff is solely to protect the interest of the publisher, not the authors. This is reasonable when publishing is expensive and no individual can do it. But things changed with computers and the Internet. That's why there is this thing called "copyleft".
