He was back from Japan in 3/1996. The paper was submitted to Nature-Medicine on 12/28/1999. The total time for this study, if true, should be less than 3 years because he had to spend at least half year to set up the lab and at least 3 months for writing. I don't think Huaxi had nude mice at that time, so they had to buy the mice from Beijing or Shanghai. In the begining, I don't think he had many technicians or students either. So, the time plus the funding he had at the time would be less likely for him to produce this paper.
I suspect the original manuscript didn't contain so much information. That's why it took so much time (8 months) for him to revise. A reasonable speculation is that he had to add many experiments and resutls to the manuscript in order to be accepted. Of course, the easiest and fastest way to satisfy the journal editors and reviewers is to provide strong molecular evidence, such as peptide antigen, identification of specific regions of VEGFR-2 and aV-integrin, western blot, ELISA, to support the antitumor effects of the vascular endothelial cells. Revision with 8 months is quite unusual for publications in life science.
