He once told me during his graduate study, he found one paper published by two German researcher on the best publication journal(SIG something) of the field was totally BS. He simply could not repeat the same results from the experiment. He told me the performance of their model was actually off by something like 10 fold. He contacted these two researchers for clarification, and was told "there was an error in the data" and that's all. My friend brought the issue to his PhD supervisor, and the supervisor only said teh boss of these two German is a big cow and nothing more. He decided to let go the matter. That was it.
My friend did said in a gathering that from this incident he lost faith in advanced research. I say he is only too late to recognise this.
