the problem that leads the proof of Fermat's Last theorem is far more important and significant than the Fermat's last theorem. A speical case of Taniyama-Shimura conjecture was proved by Andrew Wiles which yield a strong proof of Andrew Wiles. The full Taniyama-Shimura theorem was later proved by others based on works of Wiles. That result leads many other importand discoveries in ecliptic curve and modular forms. The Fermat's theorem is really a by product of TS theorem, athought to most people Fermat's theorem is better known.
