What the US cares is whether the final iraqi government is pro-US or anti-US. Let them fight the civil war. It's a good way/chance to eliminate the US haters anyways. as long as the group the US support can control the final government and is pro-US. And it takes time to achieve that. And even if it eventually fails, the lesser troops there, the easier to pull out.
