For a project that has an uncertain future to be a success, "support from leader" is critical. In the west this is called "executive sponsor". I am sure you LiKe people with experience in big company all understand this. It is quite often that attention from the senior management makes a difference on whether a project you bet your career on will live or die.

Now in a private enterprise this is easy. CEO decides your project should be killed while your personal rival's project must continue. If you don't agree they will show you the door. BUt in WangQin, there is a problem here: Zhe Nian Tou Shui Ye Bu Fu Shui. Even what you are doing is promising and the boss is willing to shift limited resource to your project(from your rival), he can not do it without incurring negative consequences. Those who are competing with you will make trouble and you CAN'T do anything about these people.

So what can your boss do to support your work? He makes you a hero. That's only way to make your rivals shut up.
