I can't say whether the dragon PC can survive the test of market, but to say it has no future at this point is premature.

You guys' problem is to assume this little box has to directly compete with PC. All you are saying is this is what YOU want from a personal computer. How do you know what you want represents all of what the market wants? The market for personal computing is very big and PC is only positioned in one big sweet corner, closer to the high end, otehrwise most Chinese families would already have a PC. There is a lot of space left for them to play within. If they can POSITION it properly there is no reason to believe it will be a failure. The key is differentiation and differentiation that really matters.

From what I can see, this little box offers something a PC of similar price can't. First of all, it has a small form factor, allowing it to be placed unders a TV or on a small desk. From the picture I see no room for a power supply box so I assume it consume s much less electricity than a conventional PC(you LiKe can correct me on this). Space and power consumption are important factors an average Chinese family cares. Secondly it comes with a remote control. THis is really handy if people want to use it to play DVD. It will be even better if they can make a design that allows playing a DVD to be as simple as conventional DVD player. They can even position it as a fancy DVD player with additional functionalities of a PC. For RMB1000 one can't even buy a decent DVD player. The third differentiator is service. If they can have scale, they will be able to provide decent service supported by factory owned service networks, something a cheap second hand PC dealer can never match. Support for a RMB1000 box is not a big deal for you rich LiKe people. But for an average computer and English illiterate Chinese family, RMB1000 for a high tech box is a major purchasing. Support and service is a big criterion when people make major purchasing decision.

Of course they will need experienced marketing people to lay a lot of ground work before a formal luanch. A lot of money has to be invested in the marketing effort. The company should also adopt a perceived personality unlike big conventional PC makers. They should prepare for losing money in the first 12 month, provided that you LiKe people won't ridicule their effort.
