All private schools (from elementary to high school, including boarding school) have financial aid programs. The subsidy depends on family asset and income, if the kid can pass entrance tests, as much as 1/2 to 2/3 of his tuition can be waived, and he will be put on a state-subsidized lunch program.

So the upper middle class has to pay 20K after tax every year to send each kid to the same school that a lower middle class kid can attend at probably 7K. Upper middle class is also subject to AMT, so that fewer deductions can be claimed while being forced into a higher tax bracket. America is for the rich and the poor, if you are stuck in the middle, tough luck.
