There are more problems with these two papers.
1. The study supposedly used two different groups of patients (see their Methods part of each paper), but gel pictures of GAPDH of Fig 6 in the Am J Gastroenterol. paper and Fig 1 of Clin Cancer Res. paper are identical.
2. Fig 2 of the Clin Cancer Res. looks fishy to me too. The whole picture was pieced together with small panels of individual bands. Although there is no direct evidence for fabrication, anybody who runs PCR gels knows that you don't do it in such an awkward way.
3. Both papers deal with ESCC, but the authors did not even cite their own paper (the later paper did not cite the earlier one). It can only raise more suspicion.
Somebody should write to the two journals.
