A truth becomes truth only after spectator think it is truth. But I say CHina then (and even now) was probably too much ahead of its time. Unlike most otehr nations, the country was overly diversified in many ways, politically, economically, culturally, geographically... THis brings an additional risk of segmentation and disintegration which could lead to further chaos and war. It's the responsibility of the central govenment to make national unity its top priority at all time. As a result, government often had to make comprise between opening up the country to foreigners and maintain control. JP didn't seem to have this this problem. One country similar to China was India whcih took a different path, the result was a country divided into 3 pieces and hostility between former countrymen getting escalated into a nuclear confrontation.
