Dear sir/madam:

Thanks for your e-mail. Unfortunately, I don't know much beyond what I reported in the story last year. Saddam Hussein allegedly brought a group of Chinese laborers to Baghdad to build the facilities at the security complex, then charged them with espionage and made them prisoners. The Army didn't know how long ago that happened.

I toured the old prison, and it was disturbing seeing the kanji symbols written on the walls. It must have been horrible for the Chinese men who were there and had no real idea why.

Wish I could help you more, but that's about all I know.

v/r,
Vince

Arabic phrases are carved into cell doors and walls inside the prison.

Army officials say Chinese laborers built all the facilities on Forward Operating Base Loyalty, Iraq, including the notorious former detention center used by the old regime. After construction, Saddam Hussein allegedly charged them with espionage and they became its first occupants. Cantonese is scribbled on the walls of many cells.

FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq ?It抯 a place that still terrifies the Iraqi people.
