1. Title of Seminar : The STAT Signaling Pathway: Mechanisms and Applications
Date : 12 March 2007 (Monday)
Time : 4:00 – 5:30 pm
Venue : Cheung On Tak Lecture Theatre (L T E)
Abstract
I will cover the following subjects:
I. Personal journey as a scientist: The path to the discovery of the STAT
signaling pathway. I will use my personal experiences to illustrate how scientific
research could reveal “ the law of life”.
II. The breakthrough in understanding cell cycle control and apoptosis controlled
by cytokines. I will also present work on how we turn a discovery in basic science into
a key to solve puzzles of human diseases. I will present our research results showing
how STAT proteins are involved in a severe genetic disease that affects bone development.
III. There are two major current projects in my laboratory: regulation of innate
immunity through STAT3 and the function of STAT3 in tumor development and
metastasis. I will present our recent progress in these two projects.
IV. I will also present my thoughts and perspectives on scientific research and
high education.
