Simple cheap method does not need that much management and personel, and you don't stand there watching, even if it takes 2 days, you can still wait for that long, not in the same room or the cell. Over dose of sleeping pill or keep pumping CO won't cost much, and no one can wake up from it. As for someone else tries to stop it mid-way, a law can prevent it. So far there is no proven case of wrongful exec (as far as I know, from the record), stopping execution because of reversed verdict is very unlikely.
