that's the point, staying in Vietnam won't do any good to the US.

Leaving that place didn't cause the domino effect which was anticipated, and in fact, it accelerated the collapse of the whole communism regimes, all of them. Sometimes, in order to win the war, one has to retreat from a battlefield.
