For instance, the Regulation of Chinese Name Romanization requires that names of places be spelled in pinyin. But those who run the universities insisted in spelling their school names in old ways, thought their foreighn friends would not recognize them otherwise.
So we still see Pee-king U, Sue-chow U in publications...
