'a' also implies that there might be others :(

'the' does imply that there is just one, existing one, that we're building onto. I like that implication better, myself.

of course, it could also be taken as exclusion...

speaking of une/la, I'd be somewhat tempted to use 'one' in English, which tends to imply unification rather than exclusion.
