In general, an author listed in a published paper could be financially supported by a public agent (NIH), a private agent (private university), or his/her own money as a volunteer. However, it is not acceptable without acknowledging the funding agent which supported the listed author to conduct the study.

Nevertheless, there is nothing wrong to question the responding author.
