* NSF Treats them differently! Only tenure-track assistant professors are eligible for the NSF CAREER Award.
* Assistant professors who failed to get tenure can change to the Research Professor track. Not the other way around.
* Research-I universities only hire those who have a potential to become a PI as assistant pofessors.
* Assistant professors have no boss to report.
Comparing the job responsibility is meaningless. Nowadays, national guards are sent to Iraq to do the same thing as army soldiers. However, fundamentally, they are two different things.
