To obtain a position as an Assistant Professor, he/she needs to go through the complete official hiring process with open competition at the national and/or international level. The whole faculty of the department has to approve the hiring. Assistant Professor is fully independent and has EQUAL privilege and responsibility for his/her own research group as tenured professor. AP can be promoted to tenured professor directly after 5-7 years. In other words, AP is a real boss.
In most cases, Research Assistant Professor can be hired directly by an individual professor when he/she himself/herself is satisfied with your research. RAP needs an umbrella and is not independent (not a real boss even he/she has his/her own grant). RAP can’t be promoted to tenured professor directly even his/her research is excellent. Different institutes may have different practices regarding RAP.
