the sci-tech achievements of "Mao's era" were largely created by old-generation returned scholars (plus using all possible resources of an entire nation to focus on those few projects). These people became too old to work any more in "Deng's era" and consequently there was no more new achievements. This clearly indicates that the "Mao dynasty" didn't train any good scienitists.
Had Mao lived longer, you would see the same thing: no more achievements in 1980s-1990s.
Also, the "freedom" in "Deng's era" has nothing to do with freedom of speech. In this sense, no difference between the two eras.
