your social and interpersonal skills are very crucial for campus interviews. When you gave the seminar and talked about your research, did you make yourself understood, and did you answer the questions appropriately? Was your talk interesting, e.g., did you have a sense of humour in your talk? When you were taken out for lunch and diner, did you talk something other than your research, say, your hobbies? Or, were you able to exchange information on such an interesting and current topic as Brokeback Mountain’s eight nominations of Oscar? Also, had you done your homework thoroughly on the position, the faculty, the department, the school/college and the university, so that you could successfully “sell” yourself to the people who attend your seminar as well those who interviewed you individually? If your answers to the above questions are all “yes”, I would have no clue at all why you did not get the offer. Also, campus interview is a two-way decision making process – while they are interviewing you to see whether you are the ONE they can put up with for at least two years, you are also interviewing them to see whether they are the people you want to be with for the foreseeable future. When we invited candidates for campus interview, we were more interested in their personalities, not just their ability to do research and teaching. In addition, campus interview is a learning process – you should have already learned some lessons from your previous interviews and improved quite a bit. I had friends who got Ph.D.s from top universities in the US but failed to get a faculty position mainly because of the communication skills. One last comment, do not be too confident about your English – the people with poorer English might have better social and interpersonal skills. Finally, I’d like to call your attention to other important issues for job interview: ability to react, ability to create synergy, and etiquette. For your information, the following are some useful books and websites that might be of help to you.

Good luck to you for your job hunting in the US.
